American Express merchant facility

American Express

Licensed acquirer

American Express is its own acquirer. Take Amex and you deal with Amex at both ends — it issues the card and settles the transaction, with no separate acquirer in between. That is also why it is the most expensive network the RBA measures.

What it is
Holds its own acquiring licence with the card scheme, so it settles your card transactions directly rather than through somebody else’s licence.
Licence
Holds its own acquiring licence
Scheme licences
American Express, as far as we can cite. Each card scheme keeps its own register, so other schemes may hold one we cannot show yet.

What it costs

Merchant facility rates are negotiated, not published, and what you are offered depends on your turnover, average sale and card mix. A published rate would be wrong for most readers, so we do not print one. Send us a statement or a quote and we will tell you whether yours is competitive.

Amex acquires for its own scheme and no other, which is what being a three-party scheme means. It is absent from Visa's acquirer register by structure, not by omission. Australian acquiring sits with American Express Australia Limited, AFSL 291313.
