Night Owl Convenience POS — bank compatibility

Night Owl Convenience is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Coyote Software. Built for one chain — NightOwl, 85 stores, mostly Queensland, and on its fifth set of owners since 1975.
Certified on mx51, which is the engine behind several banks’ own terminal offerings rather than something a merchant buys by name.
The mx51 integration uses SPI .NET and was last certified in June 2019, on Windows.
This is the NightOwl build of Coyote Software's convenience system. Coyote is a Brisbane POS and hardware provider whose entire market is convenience stores, fuel-station foodstores and general stores, with BP Nightowl Southport, Chevron 7 Day Express Foodstore and Rochedale General Store among its named customers.
NightOwl itself has changed hands repeatedly, which is worth knowing if you are buying into the brand. It started in 1975 in the Brisbane suburb of Auchenflower, founded by Don Halliwell and Rod Craig. It listed on the stock exchange in 1995. Retail Services Limited bought it in 1996 and took it national. David Hodge purchased it in September 2001. In 2007 the franchise business was sold to Adam Adams' Think Convenience, which runs it today. As of 2025 there were 85 stores, concentrated in Queensland and spread across eastern Australia.
If you are a NightOwl franchisee the POS decision is usually not entirely yours — the franchisor's system is the system. What is worth checking is which acquirer the integration actually reaches, because a franchise-mandated till and a franchise-mandated merchant agreement are two separate contracts, and you do not always have to accept both.
Coyote Software also has Coyote POS.
