About Diners Club

Diners Club launched in 1950 as the world’s first multipurpose charge card and reached Australia in 1956. Discover acquired Diners Club International for US$168 million in June 2008, and since Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover on 18 May 2025 the correct ultimate parent is Capital One Financial Corporation, not a standalone Diners entity.

Australian issuance has ended. The local business passed from Citigroup to National Australia Bank when Citi’s Australian consumer sale completed on 1 June 2022, and the portfolio was then wound down: personal cards and their companion Mastercard stopped working on 30 January 2024, and business and corporate accounts closed on 15 April 2024.

Cards are still accepted in Australia through the Discover Global Network, with acquirers including Zeller enabling Discover and Diners acceptance in March 2026. Diners was never designated by the RBA but gave a voluntary undertaking not to prevent merchants from surcharging. The RBA no longer publishes a separate Diners merchant fee; its last published figure was around 1.8%, from 2020.
