Australia's own domestic debit network and the cheapest of the three designated schemes for merchants — the network least-cost routing routes to.

About eftpos

eftpos Payments Australia Limited was established in April 2009 to run the domestic debit network as a scheme, replacing a set of bilateral links between financial institutions. The underlying EFTPOS network is considerably older; its launch year is not stated in the RBA record and is deliberately left blank here rather than guessed.

The corporate structure catches people out. Members voted to demutualise in October 2021, and on 4 February 2022 ePAL converted to a company limited by shares and became a subsidiary of Australian Payments Plus, the entity formed by amalgamating BPAY Group, eftpos and NPP Australia under ACCC authorisation in September 2021. ePAL was not absorbed — it still exists, and the RBA designation in force still names it, so scheme and regulatory references should say ePAL rather than AP+.

eftpos is the cheapest network in the market for merchants: 0.42% of value on the RBA’s December quarter 2025 figures, against 0.55% for Visa Debit and 0.58% for Debit Mastercard. Around 92% of Australian debit cards are dual-network, and the share of merchants with least-cost routing enabled in-person rose from 50% in June 2022 to 84% at the end of 2025.
