Harmony POS — bank compatibility

Harmony is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Future Business Systems. Not really a till at all — it is the Melbourne-built accounting and back-office engine that the WinPos till bolts onto, in a company trading since 1982.

Certified on mx51, which is the engine behind several banks’ own terminal offerings rather than something a merchant buys by name.

The integration covers tipping and phone and mail order.

The mx51 integration uses SPI Java and was last certified in December 2022, on Windows.

Worth being clear about what Harmony is, because the name gets used loosely. Harmony is Future Business Systems' integrated accounting and back-office system: multiple companies, cost centres, currencies and countries, online order management, stock consolidation across stores, automated replenishment, web APIs and EDI import of large customers' sales orders. The point of sale is a separate product, WinPos, which integrates with Harmony and does the counter work — customer ordering, stocktake, real-time stock lookup across stores. FBS says WinPos is "currently used in over 2000 retail outlets throughout Australia and New Zealand."

FBS has been selling business software since 1982 out of Melbourne, so roughly forty years in the local retail trade. Its integration list points squarely at mid-size multi-store retail: Afterpay and Klarna, freight via Shippit, Australia Post and StarTrack, DataTools for address and contact validation, and Slyp for digital receipts. There is also PIMdrop for product information management.

On ownership, FBS calls itself "A Vela Software Group company" and appears in the Vela APX portfolio, part of Toronto-listed Constellation Software — alongside Tower Systems, Surefire, ACR, AdvanceRetail, Apparel21, Independent Solutions, Beacon and Island Pacific. The practical consequence for payments: if you are sorting out EFTPOS, the certification and the integration live with WinPos at the counter, not with Harmony in the back office. Ask about WinPos specifically.

Future Business Systems also has Future Business Systems and Future Business Systems Windows POS.
