About HSBC Australia

HSBC Bank Australia is a foreign subsidiary bank rather than a branch, with origins as Hongkong Finance Ltd in 1964 and an Australian banking licence granted in 1986. It holds A$69.23 billion in total residents’ assets on APRA’s July 2026 statistics, against consolidated total assets of A$64,602.4 million at 31 December 2025.

On 31 July 2026 HSBC announced it is closing its retail banking business in Australia, phased over roughly 18 months subject to regulatory approvals, with all Australian branches closing. Its A$36 billion home and personal loan portfolio is being sold to Blackstone and serviced by Pepper Money from the first half of 2027. It retains corporate and institutional banking, private banking and asset management here.

It does not run its own Australian card acquiring. HSBC Omni Collect is marketed as a one-stop collection platform across eCommerce, mCommerce and in-store, including an all-in-one digital terminal with real-time settlement over the New Payments Platform — and HSBC’s own page states it is delivered in partnership with Fiserv and Azupay. Positioning is corporate and commercial cash management, not SME terminal distribution.
