Japan's card network. In Australia its cards are accepted through a partnership with American Express rather than on its own acquiring.
About JCB
JCB was founded in January 1961 and is privately held. It has had a dedicated Australian corporate presence since 1994 through JCB International (Oceania) Pty Limited in Sydney, and reported 169.8 million cardmembers globally at the end of March 2025, with acceptance across more than 160 countries and territories.
The Australian acceptance arrangement is the fact most often got wrong. JCB’s own site states that JCB cards are accepted in Australia, New Zealand and Canada through its partnership with American Express, and in the United States through Discover Network. So the practical route to JCB acceptance for an Australian merchant runs through Amex, not through Visa and Mastercard rails.
The well-known Discover/JCB alliance of August 2006 is a US and Japan reciprocity deal only and has no Australian application. JCB is not RBA-designated, so it falls outside the 1 October 2026 surcharging changes.
