Macquarie Bank

Sydney, NSW, Australia

Australia's fifth largest bank by assets, and one that tells businesses plainly it does not offer merchant facilities — DEFT is collections, not card acquiring.

About Macquarie Bank

Macquarie Bank began in December 1969 as Hill Samuel Australia and was authorised to become Macquarie Bank Limited in February 1985. It is not separately listed; the parent Macquarie Group trades on the ASX as MQG. It holds A$361.93 billion in total residents’ assets on APRA’s July 2026 statistics, well below Macquarie Bank’s A$463.1 billion total assets at 31 March 2026, the difference being its offshore book.

On merchant acquiring its own help page is unusually direct: Macquarie does not offer this service, and businesses are told to set up a merchant facility with a third-party provider and nominate a Macquarie account for settlement. What Macquarie does own is DEFT, a collections platform covering PayID, BPAY, direct debit and Post Billpay — account-to-account and billing, not card acquiring.

There is a legacy book: Macquarie Merchant Services terms and conditions dated 1 December 2023 show Macquarie Bank acting as direct acquirer across Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB with its own Explorer and Base terminals. Whether that portfolio is closed or still processing could not be established, so the correct reading is a closed or legacy acquiring book rather than a live offer.
