Shopkeeper is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Markinson Business Solutions. The retail-facing half of Markinson's line-up — a Brisbane company that has been Constellation Software-owned since 2011.

Certified on Linkly, running on premise. Linkly reaches more acquirers than any other middleware in the market, which is why most POS start there.

The Linkly integration runs on premise.

Shopkeeper is one of Markinson Business Solutions' two product lines, the other being Momentum Pro. Markinson was founded in 1986 at Eight Mile Plains in Brisbane and builds configurable business applications for multi-facility wholesalers and retailers, with customers in Australia, New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific. Its verticals are automotive, electronics and capital equipment — trade counters and parts businesses, not boutiques.

The ownership change went almost entirely unnoticed by merchants. Constellation Software acquired Markinson on 14 December 2011, and the business now sits inside Constellation's Vela Software Group. Constellation's model is to buy vertical software companies and leave the brand in place, which is why the name on the invoice is still Markinson after fifteen years of Canadian ownership.

Over 35 years in wholesale distribution is the actual selling point, and Shopkeeper is the front counter of that rather than a standalone retail system. If you are comparing it against a cloud POS, you are comparing two different things: one is a counter on top of a distribution ERP, the other is a till with stock attached.

Markinson Business Solutions also has Momentum Pro.
