iPOS Retail Management System is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Monitor Business Machines. a trans-Tasman outfit that sells to campuses and hospitals, not to shops.

Monitor Business Machines runs out of Newmarket in Auckland with an Australian arm in Sydney, and it has been exporting into Australia since 1992. The business is not really a retail software company at all — it does campus and institutional transactions: print management, PC and facility booking, meal ID, laundry, vending, event ticketing, cashless payment on a student or staff card. iPOS is the till that sits inside that, and the company describes it as built for "retail and hospitality in institutional and corporate environments". Named sites include Macquarie University Hospital in Sydney, plus Diocesan School for Girls, Kristin School and Wanganui Collegiate across the Tasman. Its campus card work has reached UNSW, the University of Sydney, SUNY and the University of Chicago.

So read the category tag carefully. If you run a shop, this is not your POS. If you run a university food court, a hospital cafeteria or a school canteen where purchases get charged to an ID card and reconciled centrally, that charging behaviour is the entire point and a general retail till will not do it. The company has also pushed fingerprint ID into the school market, on the reasoning its CTO gave the NZ Herald: "Fingerprints are particularly relevant for the school market because kids lose cards but they don't lose their fingers very often."

What we could not find: a founding year, a founder, or any ownership change. There is no acquisition on record, which in this market makes it one of the few vendors that has stayed where it started.
