Surefire is a point-of-sale system for hospitality and retail, built by Surefire Systems. Melbourne, 1997, family-run for most of its life — and as of January 2026 it has merged with IT Visions under Constellation ownership.

Certified on mx51, which is the engine behind several banks’ own terminal offerings rather than something a merchant buys by name.

The mx51 integration uses SPI Java and was last certified in December 2022, on Android.

Surefire Systems was established in Melbourne in 1997 and spent its first couple of decades as a family-run business selling enterprise POS to medium and large multi-store retailers — grocery, liquor, pets, specialty, outdoor, fabric and variety. It was an early mover on cloud: back in 2011 it bet that browser-based POS on Microsoft Azure would beat the in-store server model, and built middleware that could sit over rivals' legacy systems so a retailer could add mobile or web selling without ripping out their existing ERP. Optus white-labelled the platform as "Retail Assist" and bundled it with wi-fi and peripherals.

It is now part of Vela APX, an operating group of Toronto-listed Constellation Software. That puts it in a portfolio alongside a startling number of its old Australian competitors — Tower Systems, Independent Solutions, AdvanceRetail, ACR, Beacon, Apparel21, Sympac and Island Pacific among them. In January 2026 Surefire and fellow portfolio company IT Visions were brought together, combining enterprise POS, head office and back office, self-checkout, mobile in-store and analytics under one banner.

So the thing a merchant should understand: comparison shopping between several of the big Australian retail POS names increasingly means comparing products with the same ultimate owner. It does not make them identical, but it does mean the competitive pressure that used to push prices around is not what it was.

Surefire Systems also has Surefire Systems.
