Retailer (On-premises only) is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Tower Systems International (Aust). The on-premises build of Tower's Retailer, from a Melbourne company that started in 1981 and now answers to Constellation Software.
Certified on mx51, which is the engine behind several banks’ own terminal offerings rather than something a merchant buys by name.
The integration covers phone and mail order and surcharging.
The mx51 integration uses Spice and was last certified in November 2019, on Windows.
This is Retailer running on your own hardware in the shop rather than out of a cloud. Tower Systems has sold into Australian specialty retail since 1981, when Mark Fletcher wrote an accounting package for newsagents on his kitchen table. The first point of sale came in 1994, and the business has been in Hawthorn, Melbourne since 2009.
On 1 November 2024 Tower was bought by Vela APX, part of Vela Software Group and ultimately Constellation Software, the Canadian group that collects vertical software businesses. Fletcher remained for two years. On-premises is worth thinking about carefully at a moment like that. An on-prem licence insulates you from a cloud migration you did not ask for and from a subscription price you cannot escape, but it also means you carry the hardware, the backups and the version upgrades. Tower is still shipping to the on-prem line — Retailer version 3 landed in 2020, and self-checkout, a debtors dashboard and a fuel surcharge facility have come since — so this is not an abandoned product.
What you are really buying is the vertical depth. Tower builds for about thirty specialty retail niches, from newsagents and bike shops to jewellers, garden centres, produce stores, firearms dealers and pool supplies, with separate development rounds for specific trades. They also hold National Measurement Approval for fuel integration, from 2014. Ask them which niche build you are being quoted and what version your EFTPOS integration was certified against, because on-prem means the version in your shop is the version that matters.
Tower Systems International (Aust) also has Retailer, Retailer - Kiosk, Retailer Roam and Tower Systems International v2.7.3.2 (Cloud).
