BookNet is a point-of-sale system for books and retail, built by UniLink Data Systems. The campus bookshop till is owned by a NYSE-listed student loan servicer in Nebraska.

Certified on Linkly and on Tyro. Worth knowing the difference: Tyro is its own acquirer, so that route means banking with Tyro. The Linkly route does not.

The Linkly integration runs on premise.

BookNet comes from UniLink Data Systems, founded in 1989 and built entirely for the education market — campus bookshops, student payments, receipting, and what UniLink calls centralising campus commerce on a cloud integrated payment and receipting platform. If you run a university or school bookshop or a student services counter, this is software written for exactly that and very little else, which is usually a good sign.

The ownership is the surprise. UniLink Data Systems Pty Ltd was acquired by Nelnet Inc in 2013, and it appears in Nelnet's own SEC subsidiary filings as a 100 per cent owned indirect subsidiary organised in Australia. Nelnet is a NYSE-listed Nebraska company best known as one of the largest student loan servicers in the United States, and it holds a second Australian subsidiary, FACTS Management AUS.

Nobody standing at a campus bookshop counter has any reason to know that, which is rather the point. It is not a problem in itself — a parent with that balance sheet is steadier than most POS vendors — but it does mean the roadmap priorities get set a long way from your campus, and the support relationship is worth testing before you renew.

UniLink Data Systems also has Onestop.
