Arch is a retail management and point-of-sale suite marketed by Spinnaker Software, which began as a small family business in 1997. The software is written in-house and aimed squarely at African retail and wholesale: supermarkets, wholesalers, liquor stores, butcheries, bakeries, fresh produce, convenience stores and forecourts, cosmetics and DIY. The company has said Arch is the management solution of choice in over 850 stores.
The customers named publicly are the giveaway on positioning — OK Foods, Food Lover's Market, and Masscash, the wholesale division of Massmart, Walmart's South African business — alongside smaller independent groups and single stores.
The thing to weigh before shortlisting: Spinnaker's stated footprint is South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, the DRC, Malawi and Tanzania. Australia is not on that list. Whatever local arrangement exists here, ask who holds the support contract, where they are, and what hours they answer.
