BOXS POS — bank compatibility

BOXS POS is a point-of-sale system for hospitality and retail, built by BOXS. a Hong Kong university spinout with 1,100 merchants — none of them, as far as we can tell, in Australia.

Certified on mx51, which is the engine behind several banks’ own terminal offerings rather than something a merchant buys by name.

Certified to do tipping, phone and mail order and surcharging.

The mx51 integration uses SPI JavaScript and was last certified in June 2024, on Android, Browser, Windows and iOS.

BOXS Limited was established in 2018 and operates from Nina Tower in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. It came out of the local startup system properly: incubated by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks in 2020, backed by City University of Hong Kong's HK Tech 300 Angel Fund in 2022, a Seedstars Hong Kong local winner, and an Nvidia Inception member. A pre-seed round of about US$127,000 was recorded in August 2022. The product line runs boxsRestaurant, boxsStore, boxsPay and boxsSite — POS with ERP and CRM attached, for food and beverage and retail.

It claims more than 1,100 merchants, and names Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore as its markets. Hong Kong telco HGC resells an iPad-based BOXS POS bundle to local merchants, which is a reasonable sign of traction at home. Lassana, a Hong Kong coffee brand, is named as a customer in Taiwanese coverage.

The thing an Australian merchant needs to know is what we could not find: any Australian presence at all. No entity, no office, no partner, no customer, and no mention of Australia on the company's own site. Founder attribution is also muddled — City University's listing names four people where a Taiwanese article names one — so even the basics are inconsistent. A real company with a real home market, and no evidence it is set up to support a business here.
