CAP Software POS is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by CAP Software. Going since 1978, which in till software is close to geological — and it got swallowed by its own reseller in 2020.
Certified on Linkly, running on premise. Linkly reaches more acquirers than any other middleware in the market, which is why most POS start there.
The Linkly integration runs on premise.
CAP has been writing retail software out of Fort Worth, Texas since 1978. The original split was POS at the front counter and SellWise in the back office, with a simplified Cash 'n Carry build for fast counter sales, and a long tail of bolt-ons for tags, reporting, time and attendance and accounting links. The niche was always independent specialty retail — gift, liquor, boutique apparel, sporting goods, convenience, smoke shops, hardware and supply, lawn and garden, pool and spa. Never the chains.
In September 2020 POS Nation — until then a point-of-sale reseller, not a developer — bought CAP Retail and its development team outright, specifically to stop reselling other people's software and own one instead. CAP's president Will Atkinson turned up as a POS Nation executive in the same announcement. In March 2021 POS Nation took its first outside investment, from Charlotte growth-equity firm CreativeCo, explicitly to rebuild CAP Retail as a cloud product; at that point it said the software ran in several thousand retail stores. POS Nation went on to buy Bottle POS in 2022.
Mind the name when you are comparing quotes. Every POS Nation source calls it CAP Retail, the databases and a 2020 press release call it CAP Software, and a 2005 trade review called it CAP Automation — same Fort Worth company, three labels. It is marketed now as CAP Retail Software by POS Nation and nobody has published an end-of-life date. Also worth knowing: this is a US product and we could establish no Australian presence or local certification for it at all.
