Covetrus RxWorks — practice software and bank compatibility

Covetrus RxWorks is practice-management software for veterinary. Started in Brisbane in 1988 and has been sold twice since — Henry Schein in 2016, then a $4 billion private equity buyout in 2022.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

Tyro rates it a Premium partner — their top tier.

RxWorks is veterinary practice management software, and almost no vet using it today realises how far its ownership has travelled. It was founded in 1988 and based in Brisbane, Queensland. By January 2016, when Henry Schein announced it was buying the company, RxWorks served more than 1,500 veterinary clinics across 19 countries — Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the Netherlands and others — with 68 employees. The deal closed in the second half of that month.

Then it moved again. In 2019 Henry Schein spun off its animal health business and merged it with Vets First Choice of Portland, Maine, creating Covetrus. In October 2022 Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and TPG completed a $4 billion acquisition of Covetrus, taking it private. So a Brisbane vet product is now owned by two large US private equity firms, inside a group that serves roughly 100,000 veterinary practices globally.

Practically, that chain is why support and roadmap decisions for an Australian clinic get made a long way away, and why Covetrus sells RxWorks alongside VisionVPM rather than merging them. For the payments side, ask which terminal integrations are certified for the version you are on, and get it in writing — consolidated vendors tend to maintain integrations on their newest platform first.
