FreePOS — bank compatibility

FreePOS is a point-of-sale system for general retail, gifts and homeware and retail. Free is not quite the right word, but it is close enough to be the cheapest way into an integrated till — if the thing is still being maintained.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

FreePOS is cloud point of sale for retail and cafes, written by what the site describes as a team of developers with 20 years in retail systems. Offline mode, multi-store and multi-till, loyalty, table management, discounts, end-of-day and reporting. The pricing is the headline: a pay-as-you-go plan at $0 a month that charges nothing below a daily sales threshold and is capped at $49 a month per store, or a flat plan at $19 a month, both with a 30-day trial. For a single small site that is as cheap as integrated POS gets.

Do your diligence on the maintenance before you commit, though. The site's copyright notice reads 2015 to 2017, which is a long time for a cloud product's own marketing to sit untouched, and the company is identified by the product name rather than a trading entity on the Tyro listing. Neither of those proves anything is wrong, and plenty of small software businesses neglect their website while the product ticks along. But at this price point you are not buying an account manager, so ask who answers when the till will not settle on a Saturday.

If you are a low-volume site that mostly needs card payments to land cleanly and reconcile, it is worth a look. If the till going down costs you a day's trade, pay more elsewhere.
