Front Desk — practice software and bank compatibility

Front Desk is practice-management software for allied health and health. End of life — Smartsoft is retiring it on 1 October 2027, and that date should drive every decision you make about it.
Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.
It handles HealthPoint private health claiming, Medicare bulk billing, Medicare Easyclaim and multi-merchant. Tyro rates it a Plus partner.
Front Desk is Smartsoft's allied health practice management system and it has been running in Australian clinics for more than 30 years — physio, chiro, osteo, podiatry, the usual allied health spread. It claims at the terminal rather than just taking a payment: Medicare Easyclaim across bulk bill, part paid and patient paid, plus Tyro HealthPoint for health fund rebates on the spot, and multi-merchant for practices billing more than one entity. That claiming stack is why practices stayed on it for decades.
Here is the part to know before you sign anything. Smartsoft has published Front Desk's support end date as 1 October 2027 and is moving customers to PracSuite, its cloud product. So if someone is quoting you a terminal on a multi-year agreement against a Front Desk install, you are buying hardware to sit alongside software with a stated expiry. Ask Smartsoft where your practice sits in the migration queue before you commit to anything long.
Two separate decisions worth keeping separate. Front Desk is desktop software; PracSuite is cloud and runs on PC, Mac and iPad. The claiming carries over — PracSuite is certified for the same Easyclaim and HealthPoint set and adds rebate estimates — but it is a different platform with its own certification, so do not assume the terminal setup follows you across untouched.
Health claiming at the terminal
Certified through Tyro for Medicare Easyclaim — bulk bill, Medicare Easyclaim — part paid, Medicare Easyclaim — patient paid, Tyro HealthPoint. Tyro is its own acquirer, so claiming through the terminal means banking with Tyro.
