Halaxy — practice software and bank compatibility

Halaxy is practice-management software for allied health, health and primary health. The software is free, which is the first thing to understand about it — and it tells you where the money has to come from instead.

Halaxy was started in Melbourne in 2012 by Alison Hardacre and Lachlan Wheeler, who still run it as co-CEOs. Practice management for health practitioners — calendar, online bookings, notes, invoicing, financial reports — and the core product is genuinely free regardless of practice size. The company says it supports more than 45,000 practitioners across 70-plus countries, though its own page quotes those figures three different ways, so take them as company claims rather than audited numbers.

With no licence fee, the revenue has to come off the transaction side. That makes the payments conversation the business model on Halaxy rather than a side issue, which is not true of a product you are already paying a monthly subscription for. Get the terminal economics in writing before you move a practice across on the strength of free software.

One concrete gap worth checking against your billing. Halaxy's Tyro certification covers integrated purchases, receipts, refunds, reports, multi-merchant and Tyro HealthPoint — but not Medicare Easyclaim. If you bulk bill, or you need patient-paid Medicare rebates landing at the terminal, that is a real limitation and it is the thing to raise first, not last.
