Microsoft Dynamics AX POS — bank compatibility

Microsoft Dynamics AX is a point-of-sale system for cafes and hospitality. Every version of Dynamics AX is out of support — the last one died on 10 January 2023.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

It handles split bills and cash out.

This record names the product as the vendor, so take it as the product. Dynamics AX for Retail was the retail module of Microsoft Dynamics AX, and it has no separate lifecycle entry of its own, which means it dies with whichever AX version it runs on. Microsoft's lifecycle pages put the dates beyond argument. AX 4.0 reached end of support on 11 October 2016. AX 2009, AX 2009 SP1, AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2 all ended mainstream support on 9 October 2018 and reached end of support on 12 April 2022. AX 2012 R3 ended mainstream support on 12 October 2021 and reached end of support on 10 January 2023. That last date is the end of the line for the entire AX family — no security updates, no hotfixes, no Microsoft support.

Microsoft's stated path is to move to the current finance and operations apps: Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management, Commerce and Project Operations. AX 2009 SP1 uses a migration tool, while AX 2012 and R2 go via AX 2012 R3 first. On the retail side specifically, Dynamics 365 for Retail became Dynamics 365 Commerce, which Microsoft's own blog describes as "an evolution of Dynamics 365 Retail", and its point-of-sale client is now the Store Commerce app, which unified and replaced Modern point of sale and Cloud point of sale. Microsoft deprecated MPOS and the Retail hybrid apps in October 2023. The practical point for a merchant: if you are still taking card payments through an AX-era till, the software underneath your payment integration is unsupported, and that is worth raising with your acquirer as well as your POS partner.
