Nomni Android POS is a point-of-sale system for cafes, hospitality and restaurants. The Abacus Android till under a new badge — and the pitch was always that Android hardware costs less than the alternative.
Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.
The integration covers payments embedded in the app. Tyro rates it a Premium partner — their top tier.
This is the Android build, which matters: an Android POS runs on cheaper, more widely available hardware than an iPad or a Windows terminal, and that was the explicit pitch when the product launched — Liven promoted a homegrown Australian Android POS aimed squarely at taking cost and complexity out, with Square named as the competitor to beat.
The company behind it has changed name twice over. Abacus was founded in Melbourne in 2015 by Peter Ling and Kheam Tan and built POS for hospitality and groceries, including the Android POS. Liven — co-founded in Melbourne in 2014 by Grace Wong, William Wong and David Ballerini, originally as a crypto loyalty service — bought Abacus in July 2023 as part of $152 million of acquisitions that also took in Sydney's OrderUp, Singapore's Zeemart and US analytics product Copper. Both Abacus and Liven are now Nomni, and Liven Australia Pty Ltd becomes Nomni Australia Pty Ltd from 1 June 2026.
Group scale after the deals was reported at more than 6,000 venues and over 200 staff, with offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, New York and India. Tyro certifies it at Premium tier, tagged for cafes and restaurants. If you are shopping on hardware cost, get the full picture — Android saves on the terminal, and the question is what the software and payment arrangement costs over three years.
