posBoss is a point-of-sale system for bars and pubs, cafes, hospitality and restaurants. The work of a Wellington bar owner who got sick of the tills on the market, with a Wellington software firm behind him.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

It handles cash out.

posBoss came out of a 2012 conversation. The Wellington IT company Touchtech was scoping interest in a cloud point-of-sale concept and approached Jonny McKenzie, who co-owns three Wellington bars with his brother — The Hawthorn Lounge, Cuckoo Cocktail Emporium and CGR Merchant and Co. Touchtech partners Adrian Falvey, Robin Marshall and Matthew Watson joined McKenzie as owners in a new company, and posBoss was founded in 2014.

The product is deliberately narrow: cloud POS for hospitality, iPad-first, built for fast over-the-counter service rather than complex table management, with stock control, sales reporting, menu management and Xero and Vend integrations. It is pitched at owner-operators running one to ten venues and is sold in both New Zealand and Australia. That focus is the selling point — it does less than the enterprise systems in this directory and is cheaper and faster to set up because of it.

On payments specifically, posBoss built a joint solution with BNZ in April 2017 pairing its software with the BNZ PayClip card terminal. That is the New Zealand side; for an Australian venue, check which local acquirers the current build integrates with before assuming parity.

A POS reaches a bank through middleware. Each card below is one certified route; the banks it reaches are on the middleware page.
