Retail POS X Series is a point-of-sale system for retail, built by Vend / Lightspeed. The Kiwi success story of retail POS — Vend, sold to Lightspeed for about US$350 million and renamed twice since.

Certified on Linkly, running in the cloud. Linkly reaches more acquirers than any other middleware in the market, which is why most POS start there.

The Linkly integration runs in the cloud.

Vend was founded in Auckland in 2010 by Vaughan Rowsell (he now goes by Vaughan Fergusson) and spent a decade as New Zealand's best-known software export. It raised NZ$8m in 2013, took a Series B in 2014 co-led by Peter Thiel and Square Peg Capital, another NZ$12m in 2015 with Punakaiki Fund coming in, and more at the end of 2016 with Movac. In the twelve months to December 2020 it turned over about US$34 million and carried more than US$7 billion in gross transaction value.

Lightspeed announced the acquisition on 11 March 2021 for roughly US$350 million — about US$192.5m cash and US$157.5m in Lightspeed shares. Around 150 staff went across. Lightspeed folded Vend into its retail line and the product is now sold as Lightspeed Retail X-Series, which is why the directory record reads the way it does.

What that means in practice: the company you are dealing with is Montreal-headquartered and NYSE and TSX-listed, not an Auckland startup, and the roadmap is set by a group serving well over 100,000 customer locations. The offline handling and the WebSocket EFTPOS integration that made Vend popular with Australian and New Zealand retailers are still the product's strong suit.
