Retail Pro is not an Australian product, and the vendor on this record is a local implementation partner rather than the author. The software comes from Retail Pro International in Folsom, California, which has been shipping retail management products for more than 35 years. Its own figures: around 9,000 customers, 54,000 stores and 159,000 points of sale across 130-plus countries, sold entirely through a partner network of 80-plus distributors rather than direct.

The ownership changed hands recently and quietly. Nayax — an Israeli commerce and payments group, and the first Israeli unicorn to list in Tel Aviv rather than the United States when it floated in 2021 — agreed in October 2023 to buy Retail Pro International at a $36.5 million enterprise value, around $20 million in cash at closing, and closed in the fourth quarter of that year. So a retail software platform is now owned by a payments company. That is a conflict worth noticing when the same group starts talking to you about who processes your cards.

Practically, with a partner-delivered product the partner matters more than the vendor. They build your configuration and they answer your phone. Get local references from the partner rather than global case studies from Folsom, and settle who attends at 7pm on a Friday before you sign.
