TASK POS Mobile is a point-of-sale system for hospitality and retail, built by TASK. Sydney software house that quietly ran the tills for Guzman y Gomez and Starbucks, then got bought by a US giant for about $288 million.

TASK was incorporated in 2000 and spent two decades building POS and transaction management for big hospitality brands rather than corner cafes. In 2022 it merged with Plexure, the Auckland mobile-engagement company whose platform runs McDonald's loyalty in 65 markets, and the combined business listed on the ASX as TASK Group. That is an unusual pairing — the till system and the app that gets the customer to the till, under one roof.

In March 2024 PAR Technology, the NYSE-listed foodservice tech company, bid for the lot. The cash offer was 81c a share, a 103% premium to the 39c close the Friday before, valuing TASK at about $288 million, with a scrip alternative worth up to 98c. The board backed it unanimously and the deal completed in July 2024 — PAR paid US$131.5 million cash plus 2,163,393 of its own shares, a deal reported at US$206 million. PAR's CEO Savneet Singh was blunt about the reason: "Our goal at PAR has been to be the largest food service technology company in the world."

The customer list is the tell. Guzman y Gomez, Zambrero, Starbucks, Retail Food Group, Dôme Cafe Group, the Australian Turf Club, Accor Stadium and VenuesLive. This is stadium, casino and multi-site QSR territory — high transaction volume, complex ordering, and head office wanting real-time numbers out of every site. If you run one cafe, TASK was never aimed at you. TASK POS Mobile is the handheld end of that platform.
