UNI.Loader POS — bank compatibility

UNI.Loader is a point-of-sale system for professional services, built by Unicard Systems. Not a shop till — a campus card top-up station, from an Australian company that has been doing this since 1983.

Unicard Systems started in 1983 making add-on boxes for photocopiers that read magnetic stripe cards. Forty-odd years later it is the dominant supplier of identity and Mifare card technology to Australian tertiary education: by 2008 it had over 700 client organisations, and the US college card association NACCU noted in 2022 that Unicard supplies over 80% of Australian universities. Its M-series Mifare readers are made in Australia and have been exported to China since 2008. It is Australian owned and operated with offices nationwide.

What it actually does at the terminal is worth being clear about. The product range is identityONE cloud card issuance, CaptureME photo verification, IDmobile virtual ID, PrintMyID self-issuance kiosks, visitor management kiosks, a PaperCut card top-up kiosk, M-series readers and access cards. The card payment moment is a student loading print or copy credit onto a campus card at an unattended kiosk — not a counter sale. That changes what you need from a terminal: unattended, PIN-capable, and reliable without anyone standing next to it.

The University of Tasmania case study gives a sense of scale: 34,000-plus students across Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Sydney, 24,088 cards printed and 8,020 staff hours saved between 2020 and August 2022, with the card able to carry print credit. Macquarie University went further in 2011 with a Commonwealth Bank multi-function contactless card covering transport, library, food, photocopying, building access and a reloadable prepaid MasterCard.
