Wedderburn- SM-5500 — scale and bank compatibility

Wedderburn- SM-5500 is a weigh-and-label scale for butchers and grocers and retail, built by Wedderburn. The company behind it is W W Wedderburn Pty Ltd. Not a till — a Japanese weigh-and-label scale, sold here by a family firm that has been making scales since 1896.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

The integration covers split bills and cash out. Tyro rates it a Power Up partner.

The SM-5500 is a DIGI label-printing scale, made by Teraoka Seiko in Japan. It goes behind the counter in a butcher, deli or fruit and veg shop: weigh the product, print the price label, take the payment. Calling it point-of-sale software is a stretch — it is a scale with a payment integration on it, and if you are shopping for a till this is not the record you want.

The Australian end is W W Wedderburn Pty Ltd, and that is where the history is. The business traces back to London, where Jabez William Wedderburn worked in the family scalemaking company, and it has been weighing since 1896. Still family-owned. Head office in Ingleburn NSW, with 19 branches in Australia and 10 in New Zealand — a bigger service footprint than almost any POS vendor on this site, which is the real argument for buying from them.

The distribution relationship is a matter of public record rather than marketing: Wedderburn is named as the submittor on National Measurement Institute pattern approvals for Teraoka DIGI instruments, and appears in the required instrument markings as the manufacturer's agent. Beyond scales they sell labels and printers, packaging equipment, POS hardware, electronic shelf labels and digital signage, with customers from single butcher shops up to Coles and Woolworths.
