Xetta is a point-of-sale system for general retail and retail. Melbourne-built payments plumbing that quietly ended up owned by a US-listed student loan servicer.

Tyro only. Tyro is its own middleware and its own acquirer, so this one comes with the bank attached — moving bank means a new integration.

Xetta is not a company, it is a product — of Nelnet International, the Melbourne-headquartered arm of Nelnet Inc. The Australian entity is Nelnet International Pty Ltd, and its original trading name on the register gives the history away: UniLink Data Systems, registered February 2000. Nelnet Business Solutions acquired an interest in UniLink Inc and UniLink Data Systems of Australia in the first half of 2008, announced that July, price undisclosed. The business dates itself to 1989, and Xetta's site claims more than 35 years of experience.

What Xetta actually does is consolidate inbound and outbound payment streams into one reconciliation layer that plugs into whatever core business system the customer already runs — a single source of truth for payment data rather than a till. The sectors are higher education, healthcare and local government across Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific, and the university references are long: UNSW has been on it for over 20 years, starting as a front-end cashiering system and extending in 2022 to application fees, student deposits and tuition through a Xetta-powered checkout wired into its student system. The University of Sydney has run it for over 25 years. The University of Newcastle was the first Australian university to take PayID, through Xetta's partnership with Azupay.

Nelnet has been buying in this market too — it picked up PCSchool in 2018, from which its ANZ FACTS platform grew. One caution on the record itself: Xetta gets described as self-service payment kiosks for councils and hospitals, and nothing on Nelnet's or Xetta's own pages supports the kiosk part. It presents as an enterprise payments and reconciliation hub, and it is strongest by a distance in universities.
