Fat Zebra
An Australian independent gateway that is also, depending on the scheme, the acquirer — the clearest example on this site of why one label per company does not work.

Independent, and unusually hard to label beyond that. Fat Zebra is simultaneously a payment facilitator and an acquirer depending on the card scheme, so what sits behind the gateway varies with the transaction rather than with the merchant.

- Yes — Fat Zebra is an acquirer too
Fat Zebra is an Australian gateway that can sit in front of a merchant’s own bank facility, which is what puts it in the independent column. It is also, for some schemes, the acquirer itself — the company holds a facilitator role on one side and an acquiring role on the other.
For a merchant that duality is mostly invisible and occasionally very visible: it determines who the acquirer of record is on a given transaction, which matters for disputes, for scheme fees and for what a surcharge can lawfully recover.
Being local is the other half of the pitch. An Australian gateway with Australian support and an Australian understanding of eftpos is a different proposition from a global platform with a Sydney sales office, and it is why Fat Zebra appears behind a lot of Australian software that does not carry its name.
What it costs
Fat Zebra does not publish gateway fees for Fat Zebra. The merchant service fee is negotiated on your volume and card mix. Find out what yours should be.
