Designated four-party card network, and the other international debit brand co-badged alongside eftpos on most Australian debit cards.
About Mastercard
Mastercard began in 1966 as the Interbank Card Association, took the Mastercard name in 1979, converted from a membership association to a private corporation in 2002 and listed in 2006. Australian operations run through Mastercard Asia/Pacific (Australia) Pty Ltd in the North Sydney area.
The regulatory history is worth getting right: Mastercard credit was designated by the RBA in April 2001, but Debit Mastercard was not designated until October 2015 — eleven years after Visa Debit. Mastercard prepaid was designated at the same time.
On the RBA’s December quarter 2025 figures Mastercard was the most expensive of the three designated networks for Australian merchants on both counts: 0.97% of value on credit and 0.58% on debit.
