Cybersource

Visa

Visa’s gateway platform — agnostic, widely white-labelled by banks, and the engine behind more Australian checkouts than its name suggests.

Independent

Agnostic at platform level, but which processors and acquirers it connects to depends on the region and on the merchant facility behind it. Several bank-branded gateways, ANZ Secure Gateway among them, are Cybersource underneath.

Cybersource is owned by Visa and is one of the two platforms that most of the bank-branded Australian gateways are actually built on — the other being Mastercard Payment Gateway Services. A merchant integrating against ANZ Secure Gateway is integrating against Cybersource with ANZ’s name on it.

As a platform it is agnostic: it connects to supported processors and acquirers rather than to one. The qualifier that matters is regional — which acquirers are supported, and whether the merchant facility behind it allows the connection, are questions to settle before the build rather than after.

The product set runs from Unified Checkout and hosted payment fields through to a REST API and the older Simple Order API. Decision Manager is the fraud layer, and 3-D Secure, tokenisation, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all in the platform rather than bolted on.

Visa does not acquire. The gateway and the merchant facility are separate decisions here, which is the whole point of an agnostic platform.
