Stripe
The developer default — gateway and acquiring from one party, which is why it is quick to launch and slow to leave.

Tied in the direction that matters: the gateway settles through Stripe’s own Australian acquiring and cannot be pointed at a bank.

- Yes — Stripe is an acquirer too
Stripe holds Australian Visa and Mastercard acquiring in its own name — one of the few non-bank principal acquirers here, and confirmed by its own acquirer disclosure rather than inferred. The gateway settles through that acquiring and only through it.
That is the trade. One contract, one integration, one party to call, and a developer experience that set the standard everyone else is measured against. In exchange, the gateway and the acquiring are a single decision: a merchant who outgrows Stripe’s pricing cannot keep the checkout and move the settlement.
For most businesses that never becomes a problem. For a business whose card volume gets large enough that a few basis points matter, it is the thing to think about before the build rather than after.
What it costs
Stripe does not publish gateway fees for Stripe. The merchant service fee is negotiated on your volume and card mix. Find out what yours should be.
