Verifone

Head office:
New York, United States

The other half of the old duopoly — American, 45 years old, private since 2018, and still the name on a very large share of the world’s installed terminals.

About Verifone

Verifone was incorporated in Hawaii in 1981 by Bill Melton and spent the next four decades as one of the two companies — Ingenico was the other — that between them set what a payment terminal was. It was listed in New York until April 2018, when Francisco Partners and British Columbia Investment took it private for US$3.4 billion. It reports around 5,000 employees.

The current range splits along a line worth understanding before reading a quote. The T650 family and the Carbon Mobile 5 run Verifone’s Android 8.1 build and carry PCI PTS 5.x or 6.x. The newer devices — V660p, Victa Portable Plus, Victa Reader, UX700 — run Android 13 on Qualcomm silicon and carry PCI PTS 7.x. Certification is what decides how long a fleet can stay in the field, so the two halves are not interchangeable even where the shape is similar.

Verifone does not acquire. Its terminals reach Australian merchants through banks, acquirers and payment facilitators who brand and price them as their own. One thing it does that the others do not is Navigator, an accessibility layer for blind and low-vision customers, which appears across the Android range.
