The AP3 is the smallest device on this site: 55 x 55 x 10mm and 32g, which is a beer coaster with a chip in it. It takes contactless cards and wallets only — no chip slot, no magstripe, no PIN entry — and pairs wirelessly with a phone, tablet or counter POS that does everything else.

The display is the interesting part. It is a 1.54-inch mono E-ink panel at 200 x 200 behind Gorilla Glass, not an LCD. E-ink draws power only when the image changes, which is how a 340mAh battery runs all day, and it also means the AP3 can hold an Alipay QR code on screen indefinitely for the customer to scan.

There is a countertop version too, the same reader in a 90 x 80 x 31.2mm stand at 120g that can be branded. The battery is replaceable and charges over micro USB.

What it costs

The rate you pay is negotiated on your volume and card mix, not set by the terminal — two businesses on the same AP3 can be paying very different money. Find out what yours should be.
