The QT850 is the terminal most Australians who have paid at a small counter have used without noticing whose it was. NAB names it as its EFTPOS Standalone Terminal in its own merchant material, which is unusual — almost no Australian bank says what hardware is inside its terminals.

It is built around a choice rather than a spec. A dual Cortex-A7 with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of flash runs either Linux or Android 9, and the body is modular: no printer and it is 173 x 77 x 50mm at 350g, a 30mm printer takes it to 180 x 77 x 60mm, a 38mm high-capacity roll to 190 x 77 x 70mm and 420g. The cellular module is an accessory, and the Australian version covers bands B3, B5 and B28.

Two details separate it from the imports. The keypad has dedicated physical PIN keys with snap feedback and embossed markings for visually impaired customers, where most Android terminals have moved PIN entry onto glass. And the supported schemes are an Australian list — eftpos, Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay, Zip, Humm and Afterpay — rather than a global one with eftpos bolted on.

Security is PCI PTS 6.x with SRED. The battery is 3040mAh and field replaceable, the chip reader is rated to 500,000 insertions, and a 5MP autofocus camera with a 1D and 2D barcode scanner is a build option.

What it costs

The rate you pay is negotiated on your volume and card mix, not set by the terminal — two businesses on the same QT850 can be paying very different money. Find out what yours should be.
